Letters from Richard M. Johnston, head of the Pen Lucy School for Boys in Waverly, Md., to his cousin, Sallie, discussing family matters, his conversion and that of his six youngest children to Catholicism, arrangements for publishing a cookbook that Sallie had written, and family history. There is also a circular of the Pen Lucy School, a program of lectures to be given by Johnston at the Covent of Notre Dame in Maryland, 1879, and a petition to raise money for John C. Calhoun in 1850.

Richard Malcolm Johnston was an author, lawyer, and educator. He was born near Pawellton, Georgia on "Oak Grove" plantation. He was law partners with Eli W. Baxter in Sparta, Georgia. In 1844, Johnston married Mary Frances Mansfield. He was elected chair of rhetoric and belles-lettres at the University of Georgia in 1857; he remained in Athens until 1861.
